Soniat Writer: Richard ChiemWednesday, October 7, 2020 at 7pm EST – Online Prose ReadingThursday, October 8, 2020 at 7pm EST– Craft Lecture: How to Break Hearts

Craft Lecture Topic: Presenting two lectures from his How to Break Hearts Craft Lecture Series, Richard Chiem will explore a variety of writing methods and approaches to help create your most heartbreaking works of fiction and show how to mine from your real life. Part one will highlight The Second Person, trauma, collage, being a collector in fiction, and the work of Lorrie Moore. Part two will highlight suspense, suddenness, the art of walking, and the work of Jesse Ball.

Richard Chiem is the author of You Private Person (Sorry House Classics, 2017), and the novel, King of Joy (Soft Skull, 2019), which was long listed for the 2020 PEN Open Book Award. He was named a 2019 Writer to Watch by the Los Angeles Times. He has taught at Hugo House, Catapult, and at the University of Washington Bothell. He lives in Seattle.
